jDelete is a free, cross-platform, java-based file shredding utility.
Common file deletion behaviour just removes the deleted file entry from the directory. The sectors of the hard drive where the files reside are marked as available to embrace new data. Until the files are overwritten by the operating system, they still exist on the hard drive and are recoverable with the help of good data recovery software.
jDelete allow you to permanently and effeciently remove files from your hard drive or floppy without fear they could be recovered. You can use various shredding methods such as the Gutmann method, the US Department of Defense (DoD 5220.22-M) method or a simple 1-pass random algorithm :
Good luck and I hope you'll find jDelete useful!
